The Rockdale Community Garden was opened in 2022, following years of planning throughout the Covid years. The objectives of the garden were to provide an opportunity for locals, predominantly living in apartments, to garden; to encourage community integration; to grow and share produce; and to provide a peaceful area where people can sit and relax.
The garden consists of a series of wicking beds filled with seasonal vegetables, herbs and fruit; an orchard, with some citrus trees; and additional beds for flowers, and native plants. During opening hours hosts will demonstrate wicking beds, as required by visitors. We also have compost for locals to dispose of their kitchen food waste.
We are continuing to expand our garden by adding new wicking beds, cultivating the soil in the orchard to be able to expand; build a shed to house our tools; and erect a street library, to contribute to the community atmosphere of the garden.
