Always a gardener, the edible aspects of ‘The Corner Block’ revved up at the end of 2020 when I retired to devote more time to experimenting with developing a more permaculture based lifestyle.
The block is approx 480m2 with the majority of food production currently occurring down the Eastern side of the block and on the Eastern facing Verge.
I have been trialing round trellising which I fill with composting materials, then plant seedlings at the base of the trellis. This has worked successfully with growing climbing beans. Seedlings to go in this year will include peas, tomatoes and beans. Raised beds, ground level beds, wicking beds are being tested too, as well as the verge which is largely left to look after itself after initial establishment of the plants.
This is all a work in progress and consultation is in progress to create a masterplan for the property which will integrate many of the aspects of Permaculture Design, including, integrating rainwater and grey water into the garden system, composting using organic matter collected from the property and within the local community, seed saving and preserving of surplus food.
