When we moved here about a year and a half ago our little garden had just lawn and a weedy garden bed. My husband and I both love gardening and we wanted to make the small space have a big impact and squeeze as much as we could into it.
The front yard had such potential for a productive garden as it is north facing, so we wanted to fill it with vegetable beds. We did the ‘no dig’ approach and covered the lawn with cardboard then planted the beds right on top.
The garden beds near the house we use as our pollination beds and we fill them with as many flowers as possible and make sure these plants are drought hardy as this area doesn’t get much rain. We have had one summer with the veggie patches and they produced an incredible amount, we often give things away to neighbours and family as we have too much.
We have also started expanding the garden onto the nature strip at the front and have dedicated this to native plants with grasses, flowers and shrubs. The side nature strip we have planted trees, mostly native and have used the western wall as a sunflower garden.
Out the back we have started to make a tropical style garden. And we also have a chicken coop with our two girls.
