Ours is very much a mixed garden which includes fruit trees, greens, vegetables, herbs, vines, flowers, cacti, orchids, bromeliads and water plants.
The garden was not designed with any specific style in mind. As our love of gardening and confidence grew, we experimented and added new plants and chopped and changed, adapting according to our observations.
There are seven raised beds including one for the rose bushes. In addition, we have tried to use every inch along the fence – lots of organic matter has been added and this part of the garden is slowly becoming productive. We have flowering plants like dahlias and basil to attract the bees and that seems to be working well.
In our minds the garden is never complete and is always a work in progress! It provides enough for our family of four for many days in a week. Most importantly in these challenging times, we found the garden to be a true haven.
In the front yard we had to, unfortunately, cut down a tall tree. The silver lining is that we have to redesign this part of the garden. Watch this space when the garden is open in March…
