The Habitat is a community garden and nursery (selling local native plants and food/companion plants). The food garden is an open garden where neighbours are invited to help themselves to a little of what they need each day. Sharing and caring for others are key to the success of this garden – also a very large strawberry patch.
The focus of The Habitat is on small bird habitat, drawing together people interested in gardens and the environment, with the aim of sharing knowledge and improving habitat corridors and connections. The garden has attracted Variegated fairywrens, a number of other larger birds, 6 species of native bees and 4 species of frogs. Of interest are 2 native bee hives, 2 worm farms, composting bins and more.
Everyone engaged at The Habitat are volunteers, and in addition to growing the plants and hand weeding the gardens and nursery, spend time regenerating the bushland corridor along Shrimpton's Creek. Close to the nursery the volunteers are transforming areas of previously mown grass into a corridor of native grasses, ground covers and shrubs to connect the nursery and garden to the bush corridor.
Come along for a visit we would love to show you around.
