Our garden was created during the GFC with the goal of being able to produce at least some of our own food during the financial downturn. The property had an existing, small orchard and the vegetable garden was created within this space. As we rely on water supplied from the water tanks and dam, we have kept the food producing area of the garden together for ease of watering.
The vegetable garden and orchard have grown over the years and we have used trial and error to find what grows best in our soil and micro-climate. We also keep the majority of our chickens within the orchard area for natural pest control while leaving two chickens free to roam the house yard for the same purpose.
We plant annual flowers to attract natural pollinators as well as growing a larger garden with roses and lavender. A section of the vegetable garden is now producing food for our chickens. We also make use of interesting pieces of scrap metal – upcycling them to use as climbing frames or growing containers for vegetables.
