“Fernside” is an extra-large urban block located in Pennant Hills. Fernside House was built in 1915 and is heritage listed as is the front garden, established at the same time. The front garden features old trees, camellias, azaleas and rose garden beds. The rear of the property has our fruit and veggie gardens. We also have chickens and bee hives.
Since buying the property 5 years ago our desire was to become somewhat sustainable growing our own fruit and vegetables. Over those years we have done a lot of composting and tilling trying to build quality soil to work towards this aim. However we are working alongside nature so things don’t always work out the way we plan. You never quite know how things will grow! In summer the peaches, berries and apple tree are fruiting, followed by the figs and grapes. Later will come the oranges, mandarins, lemons and limes.
On the veggie side we grow corn, asparagus, various peas and beans, tomatoes, cucumber, squash, pumpkins, potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, radish, beetroots, various types of cabbage and lettuce plus a few other things. During the summer months we get kilos of honey and the chickens are always there popping out a few eggs. We welcome you to visit!
